An opportunity has come up for a new big exhibition project, namely, to organise a group show during the FRIEZE weekend

this October, questioning the causes, nature, expression and results of aggression.

The exhibition will take place on Friday the 14th of October 2011 - for which we got access to an exceptional public space

at Central London's Covent Garden. Here is a little bit more background info:

Sparked by the recent London riots and following the general wave of public uprising as "The Arab Spring", we invite artists to interpret

the theme AGGRESSION through actions and objects. By using traditional and contemporary actions and techniques, we invite artists

to question and comment on the way modern society deals with the very primal emotional expression associated equally with hierarchy

and defence in social groups.

Being inherent to human evolution and drive, aggression is a part of humanity that is culturally and socially discouraged, yet influences

so much of the cultural and social systems which defines contemporary life in any age.

The most celebrated and epoch-defining actions of humanity are closely associated with great acts of aggression, yet aggression is

culturally and socially seen as the worst expression of what it means to be human.

This artistic action attempts to unravel some of the current feelings, thoughts and expressions of AGGRESSION.

As we are currently looking for artists' submission, i thought this could perhaps be your thing and of interest for you.

Furthermore, due to the nature and size of the exhibition space available there is plenty of room for extra-ordinary ideas and art forms,

in that sense we also have more possibilities for performance-based or interactive pieces.

Artist Biography

Arno, London based was born and raised in South Africa and is known for his portrait work in advertising and fashion. He has recently moved into portraiture for private commissions, following requests by key actors, musicians and celebrities.

His commercial work has been widely published internationally and a selection of publications include iD, Wallpaper*, Marie Claire, Harpers Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, GQ, Chaos, The Guardian and Mirror Newspaper Groups.

His portraits are represented in private and corporate collections internationally, as well the National Portrait Gallery and Ampersand House and Gallery in Brussels. His celebrity portraiture is syndicated through Corbis Outline.

STATEMENT

Working mainly in digital photography & video, I explore identity and personality through observation of person, environment and attitude. Narrative is underlying to the body of work, using single images to establish composites or bodies of view. Much of the exploration is about direct observation, stripping away reference and back-story.
What do I see when I look out, what does it say about me?
I aim to let the work develop from a very personal sense but as much as is possible present the final version independent of guidance and history. This encourages a space for viewer participation in creating an opinion on the theme, direction and consequence of the work.

A bit about me: I was initially trained as Edit/Producer for German TV & radio but soon found out that I didn’t want to continue working for mainstream media due to its very limited creative production possibilities and actually very little chance to do genuine journalistic work. After finishing traineeships at radio & TV in Munich I decided to move to London and study Contemporary Media Practice at the University of Westminster where I firstly got introduced to off-stream artistic and media production practice and a network of independent film-makers and artists of various genres. After assisting a photographer throughout the duration of my three-year BA course and being involved in various projects I got the chance to join Onedotzero for the organisation of their 10th annual festival at the ICA and Hayward Gallery London and continued to work with several smaller galleries on a part-time/free-lance level as well as the renowned LUX agency and film archive.
How I got into curating/organising shows:
By way of being involved with the organisation of arts- and music-related events as well as creatives of different trades (including fashion and graphic designers, painters, film-makers, photographers and musicians) since my adolescence it was only natural for me to work as mediator for artist friends, getting them involved with events and in collaborations with each other. By way of exhibiting my own work and taking part in live performances, installations and gallery shows (showcases & group exhibitions) I had a natural interest to put up an exhibition myself which would involve the agenda of international artists I had built over the years. But it was not until the beginning of this year (2011) that I met Fay Sebel and actually got seriously involved in putting up gallery shows.
Then things happened rather quickly: After meeting photographer Ruben Salgado Escudero in Mannheim at the beginning of April and having been introduced to photographers Migle Backovaite and Willie Nash’s work through Fay I firstly got the idea to put up a conceptual gallery show due to the strong message contained in the photographic art works.
Having suggested my illustrator friend Nelson Santos for La Maison De Fay’s third exhibition and being heavily involved with the preparation and setup thereof slowly the idea to put up an event during this year’s Hackney WickED festival slowly manifested itself and took on form.
After gathering experience with La Maison De Fay during spring time and the organisation of a large-scale music and arts-related event (with Moodymann aka Kenny Dixon Jr. and artists from his Mahogani Music Label) I eventually had the courage to apply for the Hackney WickED acting as a gallery (this decision was furthermore based on the extensive support I received through Fay for the FRAGILE show as well as the opportunity to exhibit in a great and inspiring warehouse, through a friend). By seeing La Maison De Fay grow into a serious gallery and receiving, together with the FRAGILE exhibition, an almost overwhelmingly great feedback by artists, press and audiences Fay and me decided to build upon this foundation and cross-promote the events, as we did with the artists involved during Fragile (during the Hackney WickED we took the opportunity to invite visitors and promote La Maison De Fay and our artists for our 7th exhibition Cup Soup 2 which worked really well and has already drawn the interest of other curators like the Whitechapel Gallery as well as other commercial institutions. These are very exciting times for us, receiving that sort of recognition and interest, and I am looking forward to our future collaborations and projects together with Fay and our growing team of gallery supporters. In this place I would like to place a big Thanks to all our friends and artists who have been supporting us and have believed in us from the beginning. Without their help and encouragement most probably things wouldn’t have developed the way they did, at least not in such a short period of time. For upcoming shows I only want to give away that much: we have agreed on concentrating on Pop Up exhibitions as they allow a greater freedom of visual display, aesthetics and audience. Also, shows towards the end of the year will have a focus on social and environmental interaction and involve collaborations with inspiring new artists and locations ;-).

Nelson Santos, born in Portugal, where he studied Fashion and Textiles Design, moved to London in 2007.
After working with various fashion designers Nelson works now as a freelance fashion illustrator. His illustrations have been published in magazines such has “Umbigo” (Portugal), the book “Color in Fashion” (Barcelona) “Trisickle Magazine” (Glasgow) and several projects for the web-magazine “KCTV”.
Recently Nelson showed his work as a solo artist at 10 Gales Gallery (London) and Drayton Arms (Kensington, London), and was part of a group exhibition at Fred of London during London Fashion Week.
Nelson creates unusual shapes to illustrate his view of the fashion scene, with a keen eye and passion for fashion his inspiration come from the people in the streets, to music, cinema, etc…etc…etc…in resume all his passions combined in one drawing.

What resources do you need to open a contemporary art gallery in London? Inexhaustible reserves of energy, a network of friends willing to help out on a voluntary basis, and a healthy dose of chutzpah probably helps. Surprisingly, though, you don't need much money - it's mainly down to hard work and the availability of a suitable space. Which can even be the domestic walls! Aspiring art dealer Fay Sebel started turning her house into an occasional art gallery in February, initially as a gesture of encouragement before her painter friend Ting-An Ling's Final Year show at Saint Martin's. Since then "La Maison de Fay" has hosted exhibitions by emerging artists Caroline LS Chang and Nelson Santos. Upcoming shows include works by Carole Soulas, Migle Backovaite & Willie Nash. Stay tuned!

Flying, for instance, the flag with the German colours and Walter Gropius' high modernist design on this specific cornfield works on many different levels. The piece 'Stop trying to seduce us with your visions of the past' is going to be performed and recorded before the backdrop of the satellite city Gropiusstadt, on the outskirts of Berlin, a town born by Walter Gropius' ideas about social housing projects during the 1960's after the construction of the Berlin wall.

Gropiusstadt has, especially during the 1980s repeatedly been associated with the alienation of youth and despair, and has become internationally known as the setting of the autobiographical movie Christiane F. directed by Uli Edel. (Subtitled "Image of a Generation" Christiane F. is the true story of a lonely, bored teenager in the '70's who gets into the drug scene at 12, hooked on heroin at 13 and becomes a prostiture at 14 to support her habit)

The scene opens with the seven flags standing in a row. The seven actors enter the scene from behind the camera take up the flags and march with them in time to the music, following a choreography based on the Palace of the Soviets symbol. The march will finish with the actors returning the flags to their starting positions, they will then exit the scene back past the camera.

The corn field setting is itself also part of the former death strip dividing East and West and would during Berlin wall years have only be accessed by DDR (GDR) security guards.

Therefore, young adults carrying the flags while marching naked at dawn over this particular corn field to the neo-romanticist tune of Carl Orff expresses in itself a problematic gesture somehow signaling a defiance to the perceived failure of a possible progressive high modernism in favour of a reminiscent and accepted totalitarianism.

The flags are a shortcut ,
they are symbols representing certain aspects
of the Enlightenment project.

The flags flown all represent particular aspects of the enlightenment project, the progressive drive that led to the development of modernism as an overarching thematic structure, and which contains so many antagonistic strands. Some of these strands developed out of others, out of the merging of others or in response to them but all of them are distinct and the core ideologies that drive contemporary politics.

The Bauhaus' "novel method of education in design has been widely misunderstood and misinterpreted. Symbolism:

The starting point of this body of work is a symbol extrapolated from a photograph of a model that is the only surviving documentation of Walter Gropius' entry for the international competition to design the Palace of the Soviets in Moscow (1931). This proposal, along with those of Le Corbusier and Ginsburg was amongst those that were rejected by Stalin’s panel in favour of a 400m high neo-classical structure topped with a 100m high statue of Lenin in full declamatory pose.

So strong is the belief in life, in what is most fragile in life � real life, I mean � that in the end this belief is lost. Man, that inveterate dreamer, daily more discontent with his destiny, has trouble assessing the object he has been led to use, objects that his nonchalance has brought his way, or that he has earned through his
own efforts, almostalways through his own efforts, for he has agreed to work, at least he has not refused to
try his luck (or what he calls his luck!). At this point he feels extremely modest: he knows what women he has had, what silly affairs he has been involved in; he is unimpressed by his wealth or his poverty, in this respect he is still a newborn babe and, as for the approval of his conscience, I confess that he does very nicely without it. If he still retains a certain lucidity, all he can do is turn back toward his childhood which, however his guides and mentors may have botched it, still strikes him as somehow charming. There, the absence of any known restrictions allows him the perspective of several lives lived at once; this illusion becomes firmly rooted within him; now he is only interested in the fleeting, the extreme facility of everything. Children set off each day without a worry in the world. Everything is near at hand, the worst material conditions are fine. The woods are white or black, one will never sleep.

But it is true that we would not dare venture so far, it is not merely a question of distance. Threat is piled upon threat, one yields, abandons a portion of the terrain to be conquered. This imagination which knows no bounds is henceforth allowed to be exercised only in strict accordance with the laws of an arbitrary utility; it is incapable of assuming this inferior role for very long and, in the vicinity of the twentieth year, generally prefers to abandon man to his lusterless fate.

Though he may later try to pull himself together on occasion, having felt that he is losing by slow degrees all reason for living, incapable as he has become of being able to rise to some exceptional situation such as love, he will hardly succeed. This is because he henceforth belongs body and soul to an imperative practical necessity which demands his constant attention. None of his gestures will be expansive, none of his ideas generous or far-reaching. In his mind�s eye, events real or imagined will be seen only as they relate to a welter of similar events, events in which he has not participated, abortive events. What am I saying: he will judge them in relationship to one of these events whose consequences are more reassuring than the others. On no account will he view them as his salvation.

George Antheil Ballet Mécanique BBC Review

This is a great chance to check out one of the least heard but most notorious works of...

He called himself 'The Bad Boy of Music'. George Antheil was an American concert pianist and composer who made his mark in Paris in the 1920's as a genuine enfant terrible, courting controversy and working hard for his notoriety. Antheil's Paris debut was a riot - literally - and his reputation was sealed by a single work, Ballet Mécanique, which demanded a futuristic ensemble of pianos, percussion, electric buzzers and aeroplane propellers... and it's great to have it back on record and at budget price, too.

It's one of those works it seems everyone's heard of but never actually listened to; the only disappointment is that what we have here is Antheil's revised version, which makes more reasonable demands than the original - only four pianos, two propellers and two electric bells! It's hard to tell what all the fuss was about back in 1926; musically this is hardly the toughest thing you'll be asked to get your ears around, rhythmically it's engaging and highly danceable, and with the original excesses tamed, the Ballet Mécanique comes across as quirky rather than controversial.
